Poppy Seed Kolaches

My mother learned in this country
to bake Moravian goodies from grandmother
who learned in the old country,
small town Lipov,
near what is now the Slovakian border
not all that far north of Vienna,
capital of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire.
And while I liked the plum filled rolls,
my favorite was always
the poppy-seed filled kolaches.
Especially during the Easter season,
mother filled the kitchen with smells
from the old country,
poppy-seed kolaches, plum rolls,
chicken and dumplings.
But I don't eat poppy-seed kolaches anymore.
I gave them up.
The line of continuity from grandmother
to mother broken
when my daughter died.
