Invasive Species

On hands and knees
digging in the flower beds
to pull out the grasses and weeds
which have invaded the space,
my jeans covered with grass stains
and nails full of black dirt
while using garden tools to attack
the unwanted growth.
But the tools upend
worms and spiders,
grubs and insects
heretofore sheltered
under earth and root
making me question
just who here is the
invasive species.
