We Michiganders shouldn't be surprised
when the skies dump eight inches of snow
a few days from the Ides of March.
Still, on the day after
I fancied dozens of robins feasting
on worms or bugs
in grassy fields,
the overnight return
to winter's white feels like a cruelty
that Mother Nature has forced upon us.
Fortunately,
this late evening
the sun has appeared just in time to set
reminding me
that spring is not
so far from now.
Not so far from now at all.
