Red Squirrel

With my thoughts fully engulfed elsewhere,
some serious religious meandering,
out of the corner of my eye
and through the family room window
I see movement,
a flash of red
bounding along the ground
toward the row of bushes
on the side of the backyard.
My curiosity piqued,
and the serious thoughts temporarily relieved,
I walk closer to the window
to catch a glimpse
not taking the time to find my eye glasses.

Red squirrel.
Common genus Tamiasciurus hudsonicus.
Such a long name
for such a little creature.

A scampering red squirrel
most likely searching for nourishment
or perhaps
simply out for a morning jaunt.

Evolution has produced
natural beauty in the tiniest of life.
After all,
maybe that is the point.

Thank you,
red squirrel.
