I cannot count the stars

I cannot count the stars
in the sky tonight.
Nor can I mathematically comprehend
how distant are these twinkling lights
above my head.
With scant a cloud
in this 3:00 a.m. sky,
they are everywhere that
my craned neck takes me
and do not seem as far
as astronomers tell me.
They are just here with me now,
alone in the mid-night quiet
while you and millions of others sleep.
The Milky Way
a backdrop path
as the Dippers
and other nearer or brighter stars
display their glow,
their warm, impassioned glow
seemingly from
my heart
to yours.
