Edward E. Rein 1879-1918

“Find the cost of freedom
Buried in the ground
Mother Earth will swallow you
Lay your body down” - Crosby Stills Nash

Edward E Rein
Your tomb askew,
aside alone
Only a small flag reminds
of who you were.

Were you a father,
a husband?
Your family is not near by.

Did you die in the war?
Fast, a single bullet to your heart?
Or in the trenches did the dysentery
and cockroaches slowly eat your soul?

Edward E. Rein
Were you alone?

A single goose flies over your grave.
A dead moth lies there too.
The maple seeds cover you
but will remain fallow.

Edward E. Rein
the War,
was it worth it?
