At the kindergarten orientation,
the counselor told us that sometimes moms cry
after dropping their little ones at school
the first day of all-day school.
They said to try not to cry in front of the child
since it may enhance the separation anxiety.
They didn't mention dads or granddads.
Following directions,
I walked away quickly.
If I told you I tried not to cry
most of the two blocks walking home
after handing you off to the teacher
would that change a thing?
Probably not.
But you might know
that sometimes dads and granddads cry
and for some of the same reasons
as moms and grandmas,
I tried not to cry walking home.
I tried.
