Relieved that my final night
of class is now complete,
I feel relaxed driving home late.
But my mood changes
in only seconds
as I witness in the headlights of my car
a cat darting out in the road then
run over by a driver
who may or may not have seen it.
Even if he or she did see,
it likely happened too fast
to stop or avoid.
In the headlights of my car,
the near dead cat upended,
twitching spastically
and me helplessly hoping
the pain ends soon.
Kitty.
Kitty.
Kitty.
