Seeing you ahead
waiting on the side of the road
with thumb out,
spur of the moment I decide to stop.
Perhaps, it is all those times
as a young man that
I thumbed my way across Michigan
or Indiana.
Or maybe,
it's your bright yellow vest
which tells me you're a regular to this.
Funny how much you can learn about someone
in 15 or 20 minutes car ride.
Not sure how we got into the discussion
of you having been in the joint twice
or that you were an ordained minister.
But I do remember, my asking you
if you were Pokagon
when you mentioned inability to collect
tribal benefits.
"No damn Potawatomi.
One of the Choctaw
of North Carolina and Oklahoma."
It's OK, I understand.
Some tribes sided with the white man
and didn't experience
the trail of tears.
