Pigeons

Out my window
four pigeons sitting on a wire.
Three of them side by side by side.
The fourth about a foot away.
This gap noticeable.
Is he perhaps the odd man out?
A loner or in an unpleasant mood?

Momentarily, turning away
then returning to the window to see
five pigeons sitting on a wire
side by side by side by side by side.
The fifth has landed in the gap.
Perhaps, the loner was
saving room for a friend.

Pigeons are not people.
