Soup Kitchen Saturday

I'm tired now.
Having spent four hours
on my feet
standing on a hard concrete floor
preparing and then serving food
to folks at the Soup Kitchen,
but it's a good tired.
It's a physical tired.

This evening,
I remember the Director's having had to
bar a fellow from the kitchen
for inappropriate comments made
to a young lady
and how I admired her professionalism
and realized I am not sure I could have done that.
All as we were saying grace
before serving began
in a crowded dining area.

But I also remember
the little children
whose heads were barely visible
above the serving counter
as volunteers handed them
a tray full of food
and asked them if they liked
chocolate pudding.
Silly question.

I'm tired now,
but not too tired
to remember
that we are indeed
more blessed to give
than to receive.
