Freezing Rain

With the freezing rain's tapping
on the skylight
and the dog's insistence
that his foray outside this evening
is short and to the point,
I am more chilled
and tired.
On such nights,
winter seems an eternity
and this room
a solitary
where I sit as the windows
hold back the water
but not the tears
of the cold world
out and within.
