On a day when the rains fall
as if the protracted drought
never existed,
green has returned to the world,
at least for deep rooted plants.
The mower dormant
for much of the summer
collects dust in the garage
while we hide
in our air cooled living space
unaware or indifferent
to the animals
and humans
who suffer
during prolonged periods
of heat and dry
worrying and hoping
after news reports
that the price
of corn or berries
doesn't skyrocket
as to ruin
our Labor Day picnics.
The farmers,
migrant field hands,
and the poor
who are elderly
or medically fragile
have more basic
concerns.
